The article reads like he and his lady friend will be fine. Maybe Jack should take a page out of John Madden's playbook. Twice lucky...

The local news (I'm in the Green Bay market, same as Oshkosh) showed a still photo of him walking out of the plane covered in blood. But walking, at least. The plane appeared to be broken in two about 2/3 of the way along the fuselage.

Ouch! Yeah, at least a broken nose and some facial fractures if they are talking about surgery; thank God he walked away. As many pilots say: as long as the plane is standing up and you're able to walk away from it, it was a good landing.

Lucky man AGAIN, but I don't think it will keep him from flying. Sure wonder WTH happened to make the plane crash and break in 2 pieces like that.

I was at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI Sunday and Monday. I had a commitment at work for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, so I did not witness the crash, but I take a few calls from friends that did. Jack came in high and slow, one account had him bouncing on the runway, adding power and rolling right wing down. The other account had him stalling and rolling the right wing. The jet hit and cartwheeled, split and came to rest off the runway with both engines at what sounded like full power, a correct response to either version.

All the rain of last week may have saved him as the ground off the runway was very soft. He was also very lucky there was not a fire. One report had him with one passenger, the other said he saw three people depart the plane. An assumption is Jack was in Oshkosh in the morning, and had left to pick up a FORD NASCAR driver for an autograph session today, but I have heard nothing to confirm that.

This would have been the first time in years that I would not have had a chance to talk to Jack. He really is a nice guy, and loves to talk airplanes. Several years ago I had my daughters with me when Jack and General Chuck Yeager were pre-flighting Old Crow. They both took the time to talk and give autographs to my young kids. My kids are 22 and 25 now. I wonder how many people their age even know who Chuck Yeager is.

I wondered if you were there, moose. A few of my buddies go every year, but being out of town I am not sure if they went. I'll find out when I get bac, though. One of them has a bottle of Havana Club rum waiting for me in the hangar(machined him some parts for a crop dusting chopper he built). I love going out to the local airport.

According to Jayski, he was transferred to Mayo Clinic on Wed evening for further treatments on facial damage. had surgery on Tues evening for the damage, still in serious but stable condition

At what point does he realize he might need to give this flying thing up?

if the air traffic controler gave improper instructions to 2 different aircraft & caused this accident a reason for Jack to give up something he truely loves as much as racing??

moose said in his post both engines were WOT at impact.
I believe Jack was aborting his landing & didn't have the time or space to do it.

Another forum was saying that a taildragger was landing in front of Jack's plane, and with Jack's plane being much faster, he was either having to abort to keep from running it over or he may have stalled the plane trying to keep distance.

His injury might force him to stop flying regardless of his desire to continue to do so.

From some of the reports I've read and the damage, it seems he did stall attempting to keep distance.

I'm definitely no Roush fan, but I'm glad things weren't any worse than they were.

Crawl running on post qualifying program states that Jack lost his left eye in the plane crash.

Well shit, now we know which team will win this weekend...

Jack is claiming that the accident was the result of a conflict of air space with another plane after he was cleared to land.

That's NOT very nice Senni He looks better then I thought he would but it's a shame it cost him an eye. He says he can still fly and will. TOUGH ole man!!

I hate to learn he's lost an eye. If flying is one of those things that makes life worth living for him, he should, and will fly again.

It's an oxymoron to say he's lucky, but this could have turned out much worse.

FAA recommends a 6 month waiting period for someone who loses sight in one eye. I bet he fpilots a plane before the 6 months is over since it's not a rule but just a recommendation.

There is a interesting sidebar to Jack's crash. He crashed at Wittman Field which was named after Steve Wittman who designed, built, and raced airplanes. Steve and Jack were friends. Steve and his wife died in a crash in the 1990's.

Here is the interesting part. Steve was blind in one eye.
