May as well resurrect the hockey thread, albeit while annoyed that my Blackhawks got brought back to Earth by the damn Panthers tonight.

Kinda hoping for a Hawks-Pens final to finally avenge 1992.

The Flyers are out of it, and the Wings are out of it, so come the playoffs:
GO, HAWKS! GO, BLUE JACKETS! (Not sure what I'll do if and when they face each other......)

Actually, I meant during playoffs. It's so difficult to cheer for both teams in a game.......

Also, I can't wait to see how the Oilers do in playoffs. I lalways have a soft spot in my heart for the underdogs.

Another strange day in "goalieism" for the Flyers. And once again, SuperSub steps in to help!

The good news is - Neuvirth appears to be okay now, and Stolarz really ramped up his game for a shut-out. The bad news is - my grandson regrets that he didn't get "the call".

First round is set...

Blackhawks/Predators

Wild/Blues

Ducks/Flames

Oilers/Sharks

Canadiens/Rangers

Senators/Bruins

Capitals/Maple Leafs

Penguins/Blue Jackets

Of course rooting Hawks first, Bruins are my alternate. Beyond that anyone but Pittsburgh, Nashville, St. Louis or Anaheim.

We were watching last night and that about made us cry. Plus, my grandson and his best friend were at the game, and they said Bickell's shootout appearance was the highlight of the game. :rok:

You know me, any team BUT the Rangers. At least I don't have to worry about my other meteor team this year. So meanwhile, let me join you in saying GO, HAWKS! Along with Caps, Blue Jackets, Leafs, and bizarrely enough, Oilers! (I loves me some underdogs.....)

And it all starts tonight! This is the time of year where I truly OD on broadcast NHL hockey games. Got my snacks ready, got some beer in the fridge, I'm ready. :rok:

(Won't be picking any teams to win at all, since I don't want to jinx anyone. And with my one meteor team that made finals, if I pick them to win, it would probably work like picking jimmie-the-cricket FTW in Cup - it'll work just the opposite and they really will win.) :?

Here's what I think. We know Anisimov wasn't 100% and I suspect Toews, Seabrook and Hjallmarson weren't either. Seabs, Hjammer and Duncan Keith, all have a LOT of miles on them now, so it might be time to blow up the defensive core and their salaries, and go young on defense. And while Hossa is still a beast he is 38. Toews and Kane are still young enough that I'm not too worried about them, and Panarin is a great player. The hard part is going to get someone to take on the salaries. Stan Bowman has be very creative this off season.

Better to go through a few "building years" than to go through a "building decade" like my Flyers. When the house goalie was home last weekend, we watched a few games, and he seems to think the Hawks' main problem is their goalie. He pointed out to me every time Crawford made a right move or a wrong move, and there were many more wrong moves, according to him. I always liked Crawford but the fact remains - they lost. Maybe the kid was right, in combination with all that you said, Pen.

I watched 2 1/2 games last night. Two of them depressed the hell out of me. Meanwhile, GO, OILERS!!!

The finalists for the Vezina were announced yesterday: "Bob" of the Blue Jackets, Holtby from the Caps, and Price of the Habs. My sentimental favorite is Bob, of course, but I've seen Holtby in person when he was with the Hershey Bears, so that would be okay too. Since I've stated those two as my faves, you realize this means Price is a shoo-in.

As for that meteor team still in the mix, picture a little smilie here holding up his middle finger. :annoy:

These?? :finger: :finger1:

As for Crow, he's elite, but when he's bad, he's bad, and having horrible defense in front of him doesn't help. On the other end Rinne was on a whole other planet.

I agree with 3 of your choices, but that Senators/Rangers thing? GO, SENS!!! ("Meteor" team effect.)

I can't wait to see the battle of the goalies for the Preds/Blues, Rinne vs. Allen. That should be fun to watch. :rok:

I'm thinking my blood pressure will be through the roof before this round is over. That game yesterday afternoon between the Sens and one of my meteor teams about did me in - thank goodness the Sens pulled it out in OT.

And even though it's only 2 games in between the Pens and the Caps, I've about faced facts on that one - this isn't the Caps' year. :(

Speaking only for myself, Wrangler, it won't annoy me, and you may get your wish......as long as the Rangers don't.

Well...I guess it could be their year if they continue to take out players from the Pens

:annoy:

PS: Other than that overtime goal last night, The Flower has been absolutely AMAZING!! As the grammy of a goaltender, I know you are enjoying that part of it....

They better take out a few more if they wanna make it through this series. LOL 5 on 3 to get their first (lame) goal, no call on hooking and an open net for almost a minute which they couldn't benefit from. I have to wonder how bad they want to win.

Fleury has been amazing. Better then his normal in the playoffs. IMO If the caps aren't trying to take out the players we have teammates taking each other out!! lol

Considering that Fleury was settling in to being "just the backup", he certainly rose to the occasion as the #1 goalie when Murray got hurt. It's like watching the Fleury of five years ago; he's been incredible. :rok:

(The reason I'm rooting for the Caps against the Pens is that we've seen both their goalies in action, Holtby when he was with the AHL Hershey Bears and Grubauer with our own ECHL Reading Royals, and I'm always partial to goalies I've seen in person. But really, if the Pens win this round, I'll be okay with that.)

Take heart, LA Bill - I much prefer the Oilers over the Ducks (it's an underdgo kind of thing), and considering what a jinx I can be, no worries on the Ducks beating them out in this round.

An interesting note on the other night when Fleury lost his stick and was still stopping the puck....

....it was reported by some of the Penguins players that The Flower was LAUGHING during that....

Unbelievable!!

But you have to admit, MAF has been on fire and fun to watch....

I missed it last night (I decided that when I watch, I am bad luck) - Travis said that MAF made a stop on Ovi and had a huge grin on his face you could see through his mask....I think that man is having FUN!! And, having been a trainer for 14 years, that's a dangerous thing for other teams when goalies of any sport are having that much fun....

Im sure the first 5 minutes he wasn't smiling. lol After that the Pens came to life. Definitely a good game. What flower wasn't blocking the caps were hitting everything but the net. lol I feel bad for Holtby he played well.

Actually, from nearly everything I've read about MAF, he's almost always smiling and joking around, and that comes directly from his teammates. I'm just glad he found his rhythm again, looking like the goalie from "the old days".

I think I'm okay with however this plays out, except could we please send those damn Ducks home soon?

BTW, my two favorite cities I've ever been in are Pittsburgh and Ottawa. :rok:

Fleury returned to playoff form. Unfortunately the defense didnt help him making it even worst in game 3. I prefer Murray over Fleury in the playoffs. I might be in the minority though.

The defense (of any hockey team) plays a little differently in front of a backup goalie, and I think right now, they're still thinking of Murray as the backup. And I'm with you on preferring Murray, but its been great to see an aging goalie (Fleury) return to his excellent form of years ago. Sadly, as we all know, goalies have a shelf life.

Meanwhile, this has been a helluva series! :rok:

Yes, it certainly was; the Pens couldn't do anything wrong and the Sens couldn't do anything right. I'm thinking we'll see the Pens playing against the Preds, who sewed up their entry into the Finals last night, in which case I'll have to root for both sides. :dunno:

(So sorry, Ducks, now go set your tee times.....)

Don't know if you watched....but it's difficult to win a game when you're playing 6 on 10

:annoy:

And so, on to Game 7! :woohoo:

(I love Game 7's. There's so much at stake and it finally all comes down to one game.)

Should be interesting but still feel the Pens will win. I wasn't too impressed with the calls last night and it took the pens being down 2 guys to finally score.

What. A. Game! Breathtaking.

Congrats to the Pens on a hard-fought victory and the right to play for the Stanley Cup, and also, congrats to the Senators for hanging in there until the very end when all the common taters (yes, they have them in hockey too) didn't think the team would last this long!

BTW, both goalies were incredible last night. :rok:

And Happy Birthday to Matt Murray - he turned 23 yesterday - and what a present he got!
