Tracks that are gone, over and closed...
Muskogee, Tulsa, and now it appears that OKC State Fair speedway is on the chopping block.

The honchos in charge of the fairground refuse to pass inspection of the grandstands and the neighbors are whining about the noise, or so they say..but the local paper ran a poll and found that the majority of the neighbors had no problem with it and those who did recently moved into the area. HELLO? It was there when you moved in, it's been there since the late early '60s.
Port City(our local midget track, which for it's size almost ALWAYS has a full house)is up for sale and there is no guarantee it will be open next year. It will be open this year, so we better enjoy it while it lasts.

Salina Highbank speedway was up at auction as of December 12th and sold for $440,000, the thought was that someone would step up and get it reopened but there was talk on another board that it would take at least 6mil to get it up to operating standards with costs related to the grandstand/sponsors/lighting/concessions/etc. I'm doubtful it reopens, it's a shame...it reminds me of a dirt version of Bristol with the banking being very similar.

Outlaw motorspeedway on the other hand is doing nicely, and just got sanctioned as one of NASCAR's "home tracks" is that a good thing? Are we to expect major rules changes along with that?

There are a couple excellent shows coming to Oklahoma this year. The USMTS (United States Modified Touring Series) will run twice in OK. They put on a great show and Kenny Wallace and Kenny Schrader run with them alot. I go and see them run 15-20 times a year and I think they put on a better show than the World of Outlaws.

Best 15 bucks you will ever spend to see good racing.

They will be at Wild West Speedway in Clinton Ok on Friday April 30th

They will be at Tri-State Speedway in Pocola OK on Thursday June 10th

Thats what I heard about the show they put on last year at Outlaw and i've driven past Tri State back when it was a pavement track. Going to try and make a trip there and watch some racing this year, should be a blast.

The Z-Man (Zack Vanderbeek) Won the feature last night at Wild West Speedway.

Zack runs weekly at the dirt track I have been going to for the past 30 years.

Sort of an update, I heard this week that Salina Highbank Speedway is due to open next year.
The man who won the track in an auction had second thoughts so he put it up for sale and another local promoter/ex late model racer stepped up and bought him out.
The word is that he will be upgrading the lighting/seating at the track since it has not had a facelift since it was built in 1988, the local community is kicking in by getting some support in the form of money/sponsorship to help out with getting it reopened.

I went by it the other day, fuck.....they could cut the grass and get it baled up and probably have enough cash flow to get some of the upgrades taken care of.

Oh yeah, I heard from another fan that Thunderbird Speedway is OPEN!!! The old grandstand is supposed to come down soon perhaps midseason and some local guys offered to ferry the bleacher stands that came from Arkansas here for free just to get the place open.
Concessions are in the form of local caterers, and portable trailers are being used for offices at present time until a permanent facility can be put together that brings in enough people to get fans back at the track.

Racing is to consist of 410CI late models(same type the Salina will be bringing back so they can travel back and forth)360 UMP rule based IMCA modifieds(it's what I know them as anyway)Outlaw stocks(I assume these are heavily modified street stocks with more liberal engine mods)and economy stocks(IE economy cars with 4cylinder engines manual/auto trans)sort of a entry level form of racing.

Fuck yeah, 2 tracks locally open with a 3rd by next year.

One neighbor of mine who used to run sprints at Salina and Tulsa also mentioned the local support may have the old Tulsa Speedway opening next year too.

Great news for us Okies who love to watch the local guys run, hell yeah!
