Unfortunately, the reports don't sound too good. I just read he had a cerebral hemorrhage.

I actually saw the coma thing in a comment section from someone who knows someone at the hospital. As soon as I saw this happened in France I knew he was in trouble. Why didn't they skip the first hospital and take him directly to the one equipped to treat him? Time is critical in this type of injury and he could have gotten the evaluation and treatment he needed sooner.

Again from the same link......

Quote:
This is the statement from the University Hospital of Grenoble which confirms the 44-year-old is in a coma.

"Mr Schumacher was admitted to the University Hospital of Grenoble at 12:40pm, following a skiing accident which occurred in Meribel in the late morning," the statement said.

"He suffered a severe head injury with coma on arrival, which required immediate neurosurgical intervention. He remains in a critical situation."

Expect some kind of news around 4AM Central Time, that's the rumor. In the meantime Twitter has a pic supposedly taken at the site of the accident....

Nothing really new except confirmation that he had one operation to remove blood clots from his brain and that he remains in intensive care in an induced coma and is still considered to be in critical condition.

His mom died of a head injury after falling in her home. She was in her 50's which I consider way too young.
I read that he may have had a second surgery sometime last night.

The press conference I mentioned earlier confirmed that he had just one surgery, although more are definitely a possibility.

Michael Schumacher's condition is still "critical" and he is being kept in intensive care at a hospital in Grenoble following a skiing accident on Sunday. In an update on Monday morning, surgeons treating Schumacher said he was operated on immediately to relieve pressure on his head after a brain scan on Sunday night. He is being kept in an artificial coma with treatment to limit a cerebral oedema and a second operation is not currently planned. Professor Jean-Francois Payen added: "We are working hour by hour, we cannot say anything more".(ESPN F1)(12-30-2013

Michael Schumacher has shown a "slight improvement" but is still in a critical condition, according to doctors treating head injuries he sustained in a skiing accident on Sunday. On Tuesday the medical team at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Grenoble said his situation is "better controlled" than it was on Monday, but that he was not out of danger yet and remains in a medically-induced coma in intensive care. Schumacher's condition improved slightly on Monday, presenting an opportunity for doctors to carry out a scan on his brain later in the day. After evaluating the results the doctors were positively surprised and, with the agreement of the family, decided to undertake a second surgical intervention to reduce intercranial pressure. Following the two-hour surgery, which went according to plan, his doctors were able to say his situation has slightly improved since Monday.(ESPN F1)(12-31-2013)

update 3 from jayski...

Schumacher's condition has remained stable since Tuesday after spending a third night in a coma in hospital. Schumacher remains in a critical condition overall and is still in intensive care at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Grenoble. His manager Sabine Kehm made a brief statement outside the hospital on Wednesday morning, saying there would not be a another press conference with Schumacher's medical team until there is further news to report. "Michael's condition has been carefully supervised all night and has remained stable overnight until now," Kehm said. "This is good news for the moment, and I repeat for the moment, because overall the situation is still critical. He remains in an artificial coma and this is all I can say. I don't want to go into any further speculation about any outcomes or prospects."

UPDATE4 Michael Schumacher remains in a critical but stable condition, with his management asking the media not to speculate about his condition. Schumacher spent a sixth night in a coma following his 45th birthday on Friday and his condition has not changed on Saturday. His family remains by his bedside while Ferrari fans held a vigil outside the Grenoble hospital on Friday in support of the seven-time world champion. His manager Sabine Kehm released a statement on Saturday saying no official update is expected before Monday. "Michael's condition remains critical but stable," she said. "We would like to clearly stress that any information regarding Michael's health not coming from the doctors treating him or from his management must be treated as invalid and pure speculation. The family cares only for Michael's health. Michael's helmet camera was voluntarily given to the investigating authorities by the family. That this should have been done against the wishes of the family is untrue. We ask you to respect the continued privacy of the family. In consultation with the doctor's treating Michael, it is not expected that there will be any press conference before Monday."(ESPN F1)(1-4-2014)

Latest update on Michael Schumacher: Doctors treating Michael Schumacher say his clinical state "is considered as stable" but that he remains in a "critical" condition. Schumacher has now spent eight nights in a coma at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Grenoble following his ski accident on December 29. After his manager Sabine Kehm asked on Saturday for the media to not speculate on his condition, the hospital released a statement on Monday confirming that there would be no further information released for the immediate future. "The clinical state of Michael Schumacher is considered as stable and is constantly monitored by the medical treatments that are administered to him," the statement said. "However, the medical team responsible underlines that they will not stop to consider Michael's condition as critical. The privacy of the patient demands that we are not going into details of his treatment, and this is why we do not plan any press conferences nor give out written press releases, anymore for the time being."

He's not in a permanent coma, he's in an induced coma. The longer he stays in one the more time his brain will have to heal. Of course, they are also putting off evaluating him the longer he stays in the induced coma too. I admit to thinking that he will not recover but that's only speculation which is the same that article is doing.

NJ's latest Jayski quote is the most recent official news. There's also a report that they removed a portion of his skull to ease pressure, which is normal is cases of severe brain injuries, but again that's not confirmed.

Michael Schumacher remains in stable condition following a skiing accident that left the Formula One great with severe head injuries and in a coma since Dec. 29, his manager said on Friday.

The statement from manager Sabine Kehm does not mention the word "critical" for the first time in describing the condition of the seven-time world champion.

Schumacher has been in an induced coma in a Grenoble hospital since the crash in the French Alps.

"Michael's family is very happy and confident with the work of the team of doctors treating Michael, and they trust them completely. Michael's condition is still considered as stable," Kehm said in an email.

MORE: Schumacher's wife wants peace for family

In the first statement since Schumacher's wife, Corinna, appealed for the family to be left in peace on Jan. 7, Kehm repeated that "any information regarding Michael's health not coming from the doctors treating him or from his management must be treated as pure speculation."

Doctors treating Schumacher in Grenoble have not commented on his condition since Jan. 6, when they said they still regarded him to be critical.

The 45-year-old Schumacher hit his head on a rock at the Meribel ski resort.

Schumacher retired from F1 in 2012 as the most successful driver in series history.

There is a few articles that say Michael is improving.

They use the words "moments of consciousness"

Hope these reports continue & Michael makes a recovery.

This from Michael's manager Sabine Kehm...

Quote:
"There are short moments of consciousness and he is showing small signs of progress. There are moments when he is awake and moments when he is conscious. Of course I am not a doctor, but medically, there is a distinction between being awake and being conscious, the latter meaning there is an ability to interact with his surroundings. I don't want to disclose details out of respect for the family, but we have no doubt at all in the abilities of the doctors treating Michael, they are experts in their field."

The family is sounding more and more like "The Family."

It's good news, but I have a feeling that this might be it. He may not get any better from here.

Dr. Hartstein, in his role of unofficial buzzkill, had this to say:

So what does that mean? Sabine is a professional. At the beginning of April, she told us Michael had moments of awakening AND of consciousness. Once again, by saying this, she told us in almost clinically perfect language that Michael was no longer in a coma. She used two terms that only specialists actually distinguish; for laymen being awakeand being conscious are the same thing. This language, then, clearly was used based on discussions with Michael's care team, and reflected a highly accurate description of his minimally conscious state.

Now, we're told, with what appears to be a bit of a triumphal air, that Michael is no longer in a coma. As stated above, THIS IS NOT NEWS. I cannot help but think that this is a highly cynical use of language, using the truth to convey an impression that is almost certainly false. I cannot but think that if Michael had emerged AT ALL from the minimally conscious state that Sabine so accurately described in April, we'd be told that Michael is leaving for rehab, that he is having problems expressing himself and will work hard to get better. Or that he's having to learn to walk, read, write, etc all over again. But no, we're told what we already know, and pretty much told to not ever expect further updates.

I agree with Senni…

…all they have done, from what I read and what I know of these types of things, is remove him from a medically induced coma…and into a rehab facility where he may very well spend the rest of his 'life'…

:(

hopefully we are wrong...
